Minnie Lee Matthews Wood, 79 of 309 West C Street, Erwin passed away Tuesday evening April 13th at her home. She was the daughter of the late Otha I & Mattie Raynor Matthews and was preceded in death by husband Delma Wood in 1998. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 16th at 3:00PM at Price Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in Erwin Memorial Park. She is survived by two sons: Larry Wood of Erwin Ricky & wife Robbie Wood of Hampstead, NC; daughter Sylvia Dziedzic & husband Eric of Erwin; sister Shirley Pleasant of Coats; four grandchildren Brittany & Logan Dziedzic & Jonathan & Ashley Wood.
Lela Harper Thornton, 83 of Coats, NC passed away Thursday evening at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. She was the daughter of the late Donnie Alton & Pency Ella Capps Harper, was preceded in death by her husband Wilbert Woodrow Thornton & three children; Judy Faye Thornton, David Lawrence Thornton ,Donnie Earl Thornton.& brother Edward Harper. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 12th at 2:00PM at Erwin Advent Christian Church with Rev. Jim Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Church Cemetery in Angier, NC She is survived by two sons James W. Beulah Cannady Stewart, 89 of 230 Marshbanks St., Buies Creek, NC passed away Sunday night April 4, 2010 at Harnett Manor Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late R.K. and Roxanna Brown “Sissy” Cannady. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11AM at the Buies Creek Cemetery with the Dr. Michael Simmons officiating. She is survived by husband Ashley Stewart of the home; daughter Brenda and husband Thomas Edwards of Lillington; son Kenneth and wife Veronica Stewart of Buies Creek; sister Mary Eula Goldian of Florida; two grandchildren: T. Ashley Edwards and wife Melissa, Kenneth “Kenny” Stewart II and wife Jennifer; and five great grandchildren.
Dorothy “Naomi” Allen, 73 of 307 Denim Drive, Erwin passed away Wednesday at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn. She was the daughter of the late L.S & Vira Jackson Byrd.
Betty Williams Lucas, 77 of 83 Prospect Church Rd. Erwin passed away at home Wednesday morning. She was the daughter of the late Henry & Rexie Williams and was preceded in death by her husband J.C. Lucas & two sons Danny & Ricky Lucas. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 26th @ 11:00AM, Prospect FWB Church with Rev. Phil Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Woodrow “Woody” Anderson Hodges Sr, age 90, of 403 East D. Street, Erwin died Sunday, March 21, 2010 at home. He was the son of the late J.A. Hodges and Mamie Florence Hodges and was preceded in death by his wife Rosalie Jernigan Hodges. Mr. Hodges was a WWII veteran having served in the US Army and was at the Battle of the Bulge. He served for twenty years in the Dunn National Guard Post #59. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Tuesday at Price Funeral Home in Erwin. The family will receive friends at 403 East D. Street, Erwin, NC 28339. He is survived by two sons: Woody and Aleta Hodges, David and Diane Hodges, both of Erwin; and two granddaughters: Heather Hodges and Shanna Redlinger. Bertie Godwin Hobbs, 85 formerly of Erwin died Friday, February 19, 2010 at Britthaven of Harnett. She was formerly employed with Magnolia Living Center as a nurse’s aide. Graveside services were held Friday, at Old Field Church Cemetery. She is survived by daughter Marquita McLeod of Erwin, four grandchildren.
Katie Mae Turner, 73 of Erwin passed away Tuesday morning at Betsy Johnson Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Charlie William Turner & Velvie Baker Turner. Katie was preceded in death by five brothers William Bryant, Linwood, William, Sennie & Smithey Turner; one sister Edith Turner Scott. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 11th @ 2:00PM at Price Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Curie Parker & Alton Childers officiating. Burial will follow in Erwin Memorial Park. She is survived by two sisters Doris Johnson & husband Ray of Lillington, Blonnie Tomlinson of Dunn, brother Wiley Turner & wife Doris of Tampa, Fl.
Jimmy “Jim” Ray Barbour, 69, of Erwin passed through this earthly life on Thursday, February 4, 2010 into eternal rest. Jimmy was the son of the late Paul Clifford and Beatrice Byrd Barbour of Erwin. He was a 1959 graduate of Erwin High School. Mr. Barbour had worked with Roses Stores, Family Dollar Stores and with North Western Bank in Mt. Airy, NC where he lived for many years. He was also a former employee of Southeastern Transformer in Dunn before his retirement. He was currently employed by The Daily Record as a newspaper carrier in the Linden and Godwin area. Mr. Barbour is survived by a daughter Kelly Suzanne Barbour Simmons of Lewisville, NC, two sons, Mark C. Barbour and David Paul Barbour of Mt. Airy. Two sisters Mary B. Beasley and Sammy Jean B. Sutton both of Erwin and a brother and sister-in-law James Paul Barbour and his wife Charlotte A. Barbour of Laurinburg. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the home of Sammy Jean B. Sutton at 308 West E Street, Erwin.
Louis Michael Jernigan, 62, of Canton, GA died peacefully Saturday, January 23, 2010 after an extended illness. Preceded in death by his father, Louis Elton Jernigan and sister, Diane Yvonne Jernigan. Survivors include mother, Betty Lois Jernigan of Southport, NC, wife Phyllis Jernigan and son, Sean Rustin Jernigan, and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike served in the US Air Force as communication specialist with two tours in the Vietnam War. Mike currently was employed with The Kroger Company. Special thanks to Mike Hilliard and his mother, Jean for all their love and support during Mike’s sickness. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in Mike’s memory. Funeral arrangements were made with Darby-Huey Funeral Home in Canton.
